HubKarma is a performance statistic on the HubPages website. There are several rankings and scores on HubPages that affect writers of hubs in different ways. HubKarma is just one of these many author scores that all Hubbers should know about.
The most important of all the HubPages metrics is the author score called HubRank. HubRank is an overall score that tells you at a glance how "good" the author is, or more specifically how well the particular writer fits within the HubPages community. What makes HubRank so important is that you need a high enough HubRank score in order to stop having your HubPages links no followed so that their "link juice" will flow through to your search engine rankings targets.
The requirement to have the no follow attribute removed from your hub's backlinks is your Hub Rank writer score must be 75 or higher.

HubScore and HubKarma
The second most important ranking or scoring metric computed on HubPages is the actual score of the hub you have written. Your hub's score is called HubScore. For a hub to have its links do followed, or more accurately, to have the no follow rel attribute removed from a hub's links, the hub must have a minimum hub score of 40.
Note that the minimum hubscore required to remove the no follow on your links is in addition to the minimum requirement where the author score or HubRank must be at least 75 or higher to have your hubpages backlinks followed.
The latest scoring metric, ranking, or score on HubPages is called HubKarma. According to HubPages, HubKarma has "a small" affect on your HubRanking. That means that HubKarma indirectly affects having the links on your hubs not nofollowed. However, if the information provided is correct, the affect is minimal and it is completely possible to have all of your no follow removed from links with a 75 HubRank even if your HubKarma is low.
What is HubKarma and How is HubKarma Calculated?
HubKarma is based solely on how much you link to other hubs from other HubPages authors. In other words, the more links you have to hubs that you did not write, the higher your HubKarma will be.
However, linking to other hubs dilutes the power of the other backlinks in your hub according to current conventional SEO wisdom. The concept is that if a page has a certain amount of power to affect the rankings of other webpages - called authority - based upon linking to those pages, that power is divided by the total number of links encoded in the text of that page. Thus, if a webpage has a power level, or authority of 5 and there are five links on the page, then theoretically, each of those links receives a power level of 1 from that page through backlinks.
Basically, you are diluting the power of your own backlinks in order to raise your HubKarma.

As with all things writing, I say, while it's nice to see nice scores, I think the focus first should be on the writing. Theoretically speaking, if the writing is good enough, the scores should take care of themselves...
The HubKarma thing notwithstanding as one would have to physically enter the other hubber's links in order to raise it.
I think your writing is so hubdelicious and hubtastic but I have a few points to make overall about HUBPAGES itself: does anyone really care about points, marks or grades? And is hubpages about commerce over art?
If money was not involved here with all of this advertising would it be the same? I suppose hubpages just reflects the real world that we live in and the economic equation of supply and demand.
@epigramman: Everything is about money eventually. That is, anything that cost money and that people work on to the exclusion of working on something else. Someone has to pay those hosting bills.
That being said, there are many hubs with no reasonable expectation of commercial value`that exist purely for artistic sake. There is a place for everyone at HubPages :)

I was wondering how I was ever going to get my links followed or make money on my hubs. Thanks for the article you wrote, because it was helpful to me.
I think hubpages had to do this to maintain relevancy with Google. I find the quality of hubpage articles to be far superior to squidoo as a result.
That's an interesting take on why people might contribute to hubpages.
