Writing HubPages Versus Ezine Articles
84HubPages vs EzineArticles
There is no shortage of places on the web for both hobby writers and professional writers to publish their work. From building your own website from scratch, to the multiple places where your writing can be inserted into an existing page template, to places like HubPages, the variety is almost as vast.
While choice is a good thing, the different venues where writers can publish writing online provide vastly different experiences, rewards, and payments. Understanding these differences allows serious writers to focus their efforts in the right areas, and avoid those place that may provide no benefit at all to the writer.
Both HubPages and EzineArticles allow writers to publish articles on their websites about virtually any topic that a writer cares to write about. However, they offer a very different paradigm for doing so.
Writing for HubPages
HubPages is a site that allows anyone to sign up for a HubPages account. The writer uses this account to publish their work online in the form of "Hubs." The definition of a Hub is nothing more than a very loosely defined format in which a writers words are published. However, while a published Hub looks like a freely constructed article, authors actually use various provided modules to structure their content without the need for directly using HTML or other coding.
The author may write as many Hubs as they see fit. It is possible to publish 1,000 hubs in a month if the writer so chooses. As soon as a Hub is completed, the author can immediately publish it. As soon as a Hub is published, it goes "live" and can be found by readers or indexed by search engines without any delay.
Each Hub is ranked via a computer algorithm as is each author. Theoretically, higher HubScores, denote better quality articles, while a higher HubRank denotes higher quality authors.
Writing for EzineArticles
EzineArticles, at ezinearticles.com, is another website that allows any writer to submit their content on virtually any topic with the exclusion of adult content and various illegal or otherwise restricted content. The author creates an account and submits articles via this account.
When the author submits an article, it is reviewed prior to publication to ensure that it meets the terms and conditions of EzineArticles and that the content meets a minimum level of quality. The author can submit up to 10 articles at which time their account is reviewed. The author can either be promoted to Platinum status in which case they can submit unlimited artilces, or the author can be moved on to another trial level which allows for the submission of 25 articles after which the author will again be evaluated for possible elevation to platinum level.
HubPages versus EzineArticles
Evaluating HubPages versus Ezines provides a lesson in contrasting models for online publishing websites.
HubPages does not review articles prior to publication. This means that there is the possibility of more "spam" or other "junk" articles being published. Since the web is an array of connections, the quality articles written by an author may be lumped together with lower quality articles. However, HubPages does police its site, so the proliferation of junk or link loaded articles can be checked, although there is no guarantee that such measures will be sufficient. However, pre-review of articles is no guarantee of quality either.
Although Ezines does review article prior to publication, the review is primarily a technical one, ensuring that the writer did not place more links than allowed within the article, and that those links are not placed too high or in the wrong manner. While grammatically awful articles are rejected, there are plenty of "worthless" articles published on Ezines as well. Serious writers need not worry about ever having an article rejected based on the quality of the writing, nor the topic.
However, professional authors looking for an outlet for the things they want to write about without the oversight of another editor may find HubPages more appealing.
Within the Internet Marketing community and the SEO-SEM communities, links coming from EzineArticles are typically considered more valuable than links coming from HubPages, although no one has ever offered any evidence that it is true.
Earn Money HubPages Or Ezines?
Other than how one goes about publishing articles, the major difference between EzineArticles and HubPages is in how the two entities pay their writers.
Ezines offers its writer no monetary payment of any kind. The sum total of Ezine's compensation to its writers is the backlinks the author is allowed to include in their articles and their resource box. The value proposition EzineArticles offers is that the writer's work can be picked up and published on "thousands of websites" thus providing the author with numerous, supposedly quality backlinks. However, while the terms of service require that publishers keep the bio box intact, it seems that Ezines does little or nothing to police this. Many writers will find that while their article have been republished, their bio has not been left on the article. Even worse, many publishers also remove or re-direct any links that exist within the article.
In other words, the only value the author can actually count on from Ezines is in the backlinks that come from the EzinesArticles.com website itself.
HubPages offers a cash payment system via Google AdSense and other affiliate programs such as Amazon Associates. Thus, with HubPages, writers can earn money for writing online.
The HubPages monetization system works by having the author use their own Google AdSense account. HubPages then displays the writer's pages with Google Ads linked to their author's Google account. If the reader clicks an ad, the writer gets the credit for that click.
On 40% of page views, however, HubPages displays Google Ads which are linked to HubPages' AdSense account instead. This provides a 60/40 split of ad revenue with the author.
One nice feature of this paradigm is that the author does not depend upon HubPages for payment. Rather, since the author simply receives the benefit of displaying Google advertisements attached to their account, they are paid by Google and not by HubPages.
Which Is Better HubPages or EzineArticles?
For writers deciding which platform to use, or which platform to favor, the decision comes down to the author's goals.
For authors seeking more powerful backlinks, many insist that EzineArticles links are worth more. However, the writer will not be paid.
For authors seeking passive income, or another revenue stream, to supplement a writing career or freelance writing business, HubPages provides a payment system that allows writers to be paid for their work. However, neither site pays writers an upfront fee like writing for Demand Studios does, for example.
So, for money, use HubPages. For link power use EzineArticles.

Thank you for a great comparative article. It was very helpful.
This was an excellent read and informative in an area I had previously known nothing about. I'm sure I'll stick with HubPages, but it was good to hear about the benefit of backlinks through EZines. Do you link to your HubPage articles from your EZine articles? Have you found that it helps increase traffic!
Thanks again!
Jane
I've used both for a while now. Thing about HubPages and spam is that they do check up on things, even if it is after it's posted. EZA doesn't seem to care if things are spammy, as long as you follow their arbitrary guidelines.
Nice hub! In my opinion, the biggest problem with EZA is that it can them very long to approve an article, especially if you're a new author!
Excellent clearly written article that shows up the differences in writing for HubPages and Ezine. Thank you.
Excellent article on outlining the differences between the 2 sites. Thanks for the article.
Cheers
Great hub. Very nicely written.
ezinearticles sucks! Their ridiculous and arbitrary editorial 'guidelines' make it impossible to submit some articles. They seem to make up the rules as they go along. I wish there was a better site. I can't understand why these idiots are so highly rated! If I wasn't forced to use ezine articles at work I would have nothing to do with them! ezine sucks!!
This was a very clear description of the difference between EzineArticles and HubPages. Very useful hub. Thank you.
Very good article and thanks for writing it. There is one thing that really goes against EzineArticles as far as I am concerned. It is the fact that they take several days to check and approve of your articles. They want to "encourage" you to become a paid writer, then you get reviewed and okayed within a few hours. I much prefer HubPages now.
I like to write hubs because it's free. And I like the hubbers also, this community. Thanks for the info about ezine. What about squidoo lens?
Very interesting. I'm a little more partial to E-Zine myself. The one thing about Hubpages that has always rubbed me the wrong way is the "score" you are given. This wouldn't really be a problem but there really is no way to know exactly how your score is calculated. That's frustrating.
I use both, and both have their benefits and their drawbacks, still, again, if you build both you will see more money and mroe exposure.
I would love to see some real stats on what kind of estate someone would need to build on Hubpages before you actually start making money? 100+ hubs, 500+ hubs, etc?
Alot of people say that they make money, get traffic, backlinks, etc but I always wonder if this is true...
This is great! I've been trying to learn all I can about EzineArticles, and this is definitely a great resource.
Thanks for the clarity. I just signed up with hubpages and published my first article. I read somewhere that I am able to re-publish it on my own site, is this true?
Great article. Saves me the bother of trying out Ezine ... I had a feeling it was a waste of time and you've kind of proved it to me. Thanks
Thanks for this terrific hub. You've really laid out the differences between HubPages and Ezine articles very well. I've used both to get traffic in the past, and prefer to use a mix of traffic obtaining methods, but you're right...HubPages brings superior traffic. And that's what's important.
Hubpages is 100 times better than EZA. EZA does not get traffic and money, while Hubpages do. It took me 45 days on EZA to approve article so i gave up.
After complete reading of hub, it looks like EZA is better option for those who promotes affiliate products on their own blogs. Thanks for comparing and differentiating Hubpages Vs Ezine.
Hi Hub Llama,
Thank you for sharing this one too.I am bookmarking it so that I can refer back to it at any given time.
You are a great writer,
Take care.
Eiddwen.
I've been trying to figure out exactly what the advantages of each site are. Thanks for the hub, cleared it right up!
nice one
Hubpages is much more fun for me. I work full time as a professional author and this is where I come to relax. I used to post on Ezine but I found it just wasn't worth my time, great article though :)
Great article! My advice would be to ditch the idea of submitting articles to Ezinearticles. They take FOREVER to approve an article and the habit of including the "want to get your articles approved quicker?" link to their premium subscription (which is costly) leads writers to believe they need to pay in order to get articles published. Ezinearticles actively encourages writers to recycle older articles and blog posts, making it ideal if you know you have a good article and wish to reuse it (something most other article directories don't allow). But the first time I submitted an article I had previously posted on my personal blog, Ezine suspended my account for plagiarizing and included a link to my own blog post. After contacting them several times, they apologized and restored the article to a "pending" status. Today I rec'd a mysterious email stating there is a problem with the same article but neglected to mention what that problem is. They suggested I email them to find out. Ridiculous. This has been going on for weeks with this one particular article. Interestingly, my original blog article rates number 6 on a Yahoo/Google search leading me to think this might be a SEO competition issue but I'm not sure. I have had exactly 2 articles published with EZA. I have several articles published on HubPages and several on Suite101 so I'm fairly confident it has nothing to do with my writing skills. In my opinion, submitting to Ezinearticles is not worth the time and effort.
This Hub cleared up much of the "muck" that I have found while researching online publishing. I have also read articles comparing hub pages and squidoo. With everything that I have read, it appears that hub pages wins hands down.
-Thanks!
After reading this I will likely not bother with Ezine.
Great hub, Hub Llama! Very informative. It taught me a lot and gave me more to think about. I am trying to find the best places to "write stuff" and I have sooooooo overdone the sign-ups that I feel twisted and contorted and overwhelmed. I recently had my very first article acceptance with Ezine Articles, which surprised me, but I was very pleased just the same. That said, I tend to think of all the good people here at HubPages more often than anyone else, so maybe I'm better off sticking with just HubPages for the majority of my writing with only an occassional submission to Ezine. Who knows? I guess I have a lot to think about. Well, again, thanks for the hub! Voted up, useful, awesome and interesting!
Exactly the situation I was in.
Started off with Ezine but what bugs me the most about ezine was the how long it took to approve an article.
That's why I like hubpages. It approves instantly and screens your hubpages for duplicate content quickly.
Plus as you stated, the ability to earn money on hubpages definitely gives it a little edge over ezine.
Very informative and absolutely useful hub. Thanks for sharing.
Hi there Hub Lama
